Daybook, 1868.

Daybook of Charles P. Morse and Co. of Suncook, New Hampshire, covering April 16-December 31, 1868. The entries record the names of the customers, the items purchased, and the prices charged. Sometimes, credits are recorded as well. Customers usually paid in cash, although credit was given for other items, including rags. The store sold pins, thimbles, watering cans, curtain fixtures, pails, washboards, boilers, butter boxes, brooms, tea pots, soap dishes, spoons, stoves, pie plates, clothes baskets, water dippers, and many other items, including apples and eggs. They also repaired pots, pans, and pails. Some purchases of stock for the store are recorded. In front of the volume is written Morse's and Woodman's agreement of partnership, which was entered into after Woodman paid Morse for half the stock.

Morse was a leader in business and social circles in Kansas City, Missouri. He participated in the early days of the stockyards, packing houses, and railroads. He was born and raised in the Boston area and attended Harvard University, graduating with a S.B. in 1858. On April 15, 1868, Charles P. Morse of Pembroke, New Hampshire, and John L. Woodman of Deerfield entered into a partnership called Charles P. Morse and Co. The purpose of the business, located in Suncook, New Hampshire, was to sell the sorts of goods as were usually found in stores retailing stoves, tin, wooden objects, glass, and britania ware.
